Finalimpressions Blog - May 06

May 28, 2006 - Kershaw Park Canandaigua NY - 4:45AM

I awoke at 3:45 AM. Not sure why, maybe because I wanted to shoot Kershaw Park and this was the best time to get up. At 4:10 I left home in the dark with coffee and camera.

Around 4:45 I arrived at the Park and it was spectacular. A heavy fog driven by brisk winds was shrouding the park. The trees were raining from the accumulated mist and the waves were trashing the shoreline.

A perfect morning for a shoot.

May 23, 2006 - Shot number 6,164

I've had this Canon 20D just a little over 1 year now and have taken over 6 thousand shots with it ... and about 6 thousand of them are fair to poor to downright "what the heck was I thinking". Actually a little over 100 of them are great shots and worthy of conversion to artwork, as in the print below. This means my "good" shot rate is about 2 percent, or about 1 in 50. Over the last 4 years I have averaged about 6000 shots a year.

It was an absolute downpour when we left home, but an hour later the clouds were receding and a moody sky accompanied the lake. It was a great day to "crawl" around taking pictures.

This print will premiere at Homearama in Canandaigua NY starting June 3rd.

May 17, 2006 - Apple Tree Art

We have several June first deadlines so we've been on the road shooting over the last few weeks, therefore it's been difficult to keep up with the blog.

The apple trees were in bloom last week, but finding an old stand of neglected tress is not that easy, but certainly they have more character. This shot from a old orchard near Syracuse NY.

May 6, 2006 - Just Art

Sometimes I see a shot that to me, is just pure art.

Today we were driving to an apple orchard area on Rt. 20 Southwest of Syracuse and we passed this field. I had to stop. The old trail up the hill forming an "S" shape.

Wouldn't we like to go to the top of the hill and just look out across the world? What might be on the other side? Maybe we could just roll down the hill on a warm July afternoon and be a kid again.

May 4, 2006 - Color

Sometimes sienna tones just don't do it. Although spring in my favorite time to shoot because the new leaves are so bright green, sometimes those wonderful pinks and lavender colors just have to be stated.

Here’s a long lens shot from Durrand Park. I like the longer lens because it flattens the subject and provides interesting weight to each element in the image, none too dominant.
