January 27, 2007 - Ice is Hard to Print

While developing an image for a note card, I was once again reminded how difficult it is to get a good print from an ice photograph. The trick is keep the luminance of the image very high while also keeping the contrast high as well.

I have many failed attempts to convey the sense of light and bright when it comes to ice and heavy snow. In many cases it would be better to print to image in B&W and keep a cool color to the image.

Here is my latest piece, probably only on a note card. We plan a shipment of cards to Burlingham Books, 2 Main St., Perry NY, 585.237.3190. This one should be in the shipment.

"Ice in Letchworth"

January 21, 2007 - "Ice in Perry"

We had driven to New Jersey for family business on Friday, and decided on the way back to Rochester that we would take the southern route across New York to avoid some snowstorms in Syracuse. This took us up route 17, and it was only a small diversion to check in on Burlingham Books in Perry to check on our card display. Much to our delight the freezing rain was still on the trees and fields in that area.

We took a short break and I photographed the Letchworth and Perry NY area. It was magical. I just wish we would have had time to spend the day shooting the park, but unfortunately I had other business committments later that day.

January 13, 2007 - "The Magic of Monochrome"

I have accepted an offer to talk about my passion for monochrome photography at Camera Rochester on April 16. They meet 7:15 P.M. usually 1st & 3rd Mondays at the Atonement Lutheran Church, 1900 Westfall Rd.

An anecdotal talk with a follow-up discussion.

I will begin with how I got started with monochrome artwork at age 14 and my art and photography adventures over the years. Also included will be a brief inclusion of my work in medium and large format traditional silver B&W, old developers and alternative lith printing that influences my current work. However most time will be spent on the difficulties have I encountered in digital mediums and how I used those adversities to shape the direction of my work. I will also touch on my presentation techniques, marketing strategies and why I developed a unique website for my business.

Guests are welcome to attend. Hope to see you there!
